ALICEVILLE - Ann Chalmers Summerville Baker of Aliceville, Ala., South Pickens County entered her eternal home at DCH Regional Medical Center on the 16th of May, 2016. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Aliceville on Friday, May 20, 2016 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Jason Housewright and Dr. Thomas G. Kay, Jr., officiating. A private family burial will be held at Oak Grove Franconia Cemetery with Skelton Funeral Home of Reform directing. Visitation will be held immediately following the service in the Fellowship Hall of the church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Claude Baker, Jr. and her parents, Hugh Holmes Summerville, Sr. and Carrie Stringfellow Summerville.
Survivors include her sister, Jane Summerville Gwinn and husband, Charles R. Gwinn, Jr.; brother, Hugh Holmes Summerville, Jr. and wife, Lena S. Summerville; nieces, Anna Gwinn Whitfill and husband, Martin, Cynthia Ann Lewis and husband, Joe and Elizabeth Goodson and husband, Lee; nephews, Charles R. Gwinn III and wife, Amy and Frank Murphy Summerville and wife, Pamela; great-nieces, Elizabeth Ann Gwinn, Sarah Jane Milford Gwinn, Elizabeth Ann Summerville and Clara Elizabeth Smart and husband, Jed; great-nephews, Forrest Baker Lewis and Andrew Olan Whitfill; great-great-niece, Waverly Mae Smart; and many dearly loved first cousins and other cousins.
Mrs. Baker graduated from Aliceville High School, attended Huntingdon College for two years, and graduated from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. She taught two years in the Pickens County School System and nine years in the Fairfax County School System in Fairfax, Virginia. She was instrumental in the formation of a nursery school for three and four year olds in Alexandria, Virginia. That school is still in existence today.
Mrs. Baker was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher, a circle chairman for many years, a member of the Park Somerville Sunday School class, teacher and director of Vacation Bible School, youth leader, taught Junior Sunday School classes for several years and was the Church Historian for many years.
Over the years, Mrs. Baker was involved in a variety of civic organizations including Secretary-Treasurer of Oak Grove Franconia Cemetery Board, a member of the local Red Cross Board, and volunteered with the Mental Health Association of Alexandria, Virginia. She was a member of the New Era Arts Club, the Garden Club of Aliceville, and the Pickens County Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution. Ann was also the family historian for both the Summerville and Stringfellow families.
Mrs. Baker was a thoughtful, caring Christian lady who loved the Lord and her family. She never missed writing a thank you note or sending cards to encourage, thank, or commend others on a job well done.
Pallbearers will be Everett Owens, Bob Owens, John Rainer, Joe Lewis, Ted Sisty and Jack Somerville.
Honorary pallbearers are Elders of Aliceville First Presbyterian Church, Sonny Stirling, Larry Hamlin, John Hagerman, Jay Parker, Willie Wilson, Charles Davis and Mark Gilliam.
