MOBILE | Cary Charles Wharton, age 57, died May 5th, 2016 after a lengthy illness. He was born in Birmingham, Alabama and moved shortly to Tuscaloosa. At the time of his death he had been a longtime resident of Mobile. He is preceded in death by his father, Ray Wharton; his step-father, J.M. Weldon; and his nephew, Blair Walton. He is survived by his mother, Merle Wharton Weldon; his daughter, Joycelyn; sister, Dusty Walton (Norman); and brothers, Andy Wharton (Susan) and Dr. Van Wharton.Cary was an accomplished and avid golfer from an early age. He spent many hours on the golf course at Tuscaloosa Country Club with his father. His senior year at Tuscaloosa High School he won the Alabama State High School golf championship.Afterwards he was awarded a scholarship to play golf at the UniversityOf Alabama. Golf remained the major focus of his life. He worked at various golfing venues his entire career.He was a gifted teacher and served as Assistant Pro at the Country Club of Mobile where he started many young people on a lifelong love of the game.Cary will be remembered as a loving father, brother, and uncle but he always considered his daughter Joycelyn to be his greatest legacy. They shared a love of athletics and Alabama football. He was especially proud of her accomplishments in basketball, soccer, and academics at St. Paul's Episcopal School in Mobile.A private service for family and friends will take place on Wednesday, May 11, 2016, at 1:00 p.m. at Skelton Funeral Home in Reform, Alabama. A memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced at Springhill Presbyterian Church in Mobile. In lieu of flowers, a memorial gift can be sent to St. Paul's EpiscopalSchool, 161 Dogwood Lane, Mobile, Alabama 36608.
