Obituary

GORDO | Charles A. Duren, Sr., age 85, of Gordo, passed away on Veteran's Day, November 11, 2014, peacefully in his sleep. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, November 14, 2014, at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Michael Trull and Rev. Max Stripling officiating and Skelton Funeral Home of Reform directing. Visitation will be tonight, Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to services at the church.He was preceded in death by his parents, Wesley Albert Duren and Emma Gladys Allen Duren; and his sister, Ann Duren Drinnon.Survivors include his wife, Agnes Criswell Duren; sons, Charles Duren, Jr. and his wife, Dana; three grandchildren, Danielle Tiller, Devin Duren and Charles Duren III; sisters, Francis Windle and Gladys Nell Jones; brother, George Duren; his cousins, nieces and nephews and the rest of the his family and friends.Charles, known by many as Captain Duren, was born in Gordo, Alabama on February 12, 1929. Charles served in the United States Air Force for more than 20 years and retired from active duty in the spring of 1969. After retirement he proudly attended the University of Alabama where he earned a Bachelor's of Liberal Arts in 1974 and ultimately a Masters of Arts degree. After graduating from the University of Alabama, he joined Pickens County Schools as an educator and counselor where he helped young adults further their professional and personal goals. He retired from Pickens County Schools in 2001.Charles was an avid hunter, farmer and tinkerer. He could be routinely found working on projects around his home, or more likely, enlisting the help of his many friends and neighbors in their pursuits, which they gladly provided their assistance. Also, as an alumnus of the "The University," he was a loyal Crimson Tide fan.Charles married Agnes Ina Criswell Duren on September 19, 1959; they were married 55 years.Pallbearers will be Tim Hall, Albert Earl Windle, Andy Criswell, Eddie Criswell, Tony Elmore, Charles Duren III, Jon Tiller and Wayne Cooper.
