Dorothy Ruth Stapp (Plott) Messick, resident of Montgomery, Alabama since 1972, passed away in her home surrounded by loved ones, Tuesday, June 29, at the age of 88. Dorothy is survived by her husband, James Messick, her two children, Carolyn Ruth Plott with partner Faye Andrews and their daughter Rylie of Auburn, AL, and David William Plott and his wife Debbie of Mount Juliet, TN. She is predeceased by her parents, Ruth Hanson Stapp and Oscar Anderson Stapp of Pickensville, AL. Dorothy was born September 28, 1932 and raised in Pickensville, attended Aliceville High School, and graduated from the University of Alabama in 1954. Dorothy taught school prior to her marriage to William H. Plott, Jr. After 27 years of marriage and sending her kids to college, she met and married her second husband and dance partner, James Messick. James and Dorothy worked for years together at the food pantry at Dalraida Methodist Church. They recently celebrated 28 years of marriage, and were able to square dance twice a week for most of those years, attending several national square dance conventions along the way. Dorothy always looked forward to time with family at holidays, and July 4th was always special because that was her mother's birthday. Dorothy was an avid reader all her life and loved gardening, and was especially proud of her roses. She loved the time she was able to spend with her adopted granddaughter Rylie. Dorothy was a long time member of Eastern Hills Baptist Church in Montgomery, then joined Dalraida Methodist in 1993 when she and James married. There will be a celebration of life service on Friday, July 2, 2021 at 3:00 pm at Leak Memory Chapel, 945 Lincoln Road, Montgomery, AL 36109, preceded by a visitation from 1:30-3:00 pm. A graveside service is set for Saturday, July 3, 2021, at 11:00 am at Unity Cemetery, Aliceville, AL under the direction of Skelton Funeral Home of Reform, AL.
