NORTHPORT | Edward Hugh "Ed" Heritage, Jr., age 53, of Northport, died July 6, 2014, at Northport Medical Center. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, July 10, 2014, at Skelton Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Brannon Pinion and Rev. Tim Meherg officiating. Burial will follow in Graham Memorial Cemetery with Skelton Funeral Home of Reform directing. There will be no graveside services. Visitation will be one hour prior and immediately following the service at the funeral home.He was preceded in death by his wife, Mandy Christine Hopper Heritage.Survivors include his daughter, Claire Elisabeth Heritage of Northport, Ala.; parents, Edward "Ed" Heritage, Sr. and Bettye Heritage of Reform, Ala.; and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.Edward Hugh Heritage, Jr., was born July 26, 1960 in Reform, Alabama to Edward Hugh Heritage, Sr. and Bettye Lyles Heritage. He was a graduate of Pickens Academy and he received both his B.S. and M.S.W. from the University of Alabama. While at the university, he was a cherished member of the Mallet Assembly Honors Residence Program. He worked for Seton Home Health, Indian Rivers Mental Health and Youth Services Institute at the University of Alabama. Heritage was a thoughtful and sensitive social worker. He was known among his friends and family for being loving and supportive, dispensing sage advice with humor. He would often intersperse his wisdom with quotes from Kurt Vonnegut, the Bible, Rumi and John Prine, among others. He was honored and remembered in memoirs published in 2013 by fellow Mallet Assembly member, Rick Newton. Heritage adored his daughter, who adored him back, and often said, "She was the coolest person he knew."Honorary pallbearers are Michael Acker, Mark Austell, Rick Barefield, Frank Chandler, Larry Handley, Craig Mealer, Rick Newton, John Rainer, Andrew Smith, Rich Stringer and Joe Wright.
