Obituary

GORDO – James Edward Simmons, Sr., age 90, of Gordo, Ala., died May 5, 2016, at Hospice of West Alabama. Services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, 2016, at Skelton Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Hershel Owen and Rev. Mike Trull officiating. Burial will follow in Greenhill Memorial Gardens with Skelton Funeral Home of Reform directing. Visitation will be one hour prior and immediately following the services at the funeral home.He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances Snider Simmons and his parents.Survivors include his daughters, Treasa Ann Simmons and Deborah Simmons Homan; sons, James Edward Simmons, Jr., Charles Bradford Simmons and William David Simmons; sisters, Linda Joy Holloway and Betty Jean Lewis; 15 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.Mr. Simmons was born April 23, 1926 in the Moore's Bridge community of Tuscaloosa County, Alabama to the late Edward Simmons and Erdeal Vice Simmons. After 14 years of service, James retired from the Washington D.C. Police Department where he received the Medal of Valor. He was a member and past treasurer at Emmanuel Baptist Church, a United States Navy veteran of World War II and was well-known for his carpentry.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Hospice of West Alabama, 3851 Loop Road, Tuscaloosa, AL 35404.
