Jerry Wayne "Pop" Smith, age 73, of Gordo, AL passed away Sunday, December 27, 2020 at DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, AL. A memorial service will be held 11:00 am Saturday, January 2, 2021 at Skelton Funeral Home Chapel with Skelton Funeral Home of Reform directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy Baines Mertz and Jessie Alonzo Smith.
Survivors include his children, Ingersoll Avelino(Karla) of Van Nuys, CA; Ronald Smith(Tania) of Apache Junction, AZ; Jennifer Smith of Tuscaloosa, and Jessica Harcrow(Chris) of Tuscaloosa; his brother, Terry Smith(Marie) of Northport; his sister, Ann Nyberg(John) of Laguna Woods, CA; ten grandchildren, Aric Diaz of Nashville, TN, Haley Smith of Torrance, CA, Sarah Smith of Torrance, CA, Eva Avelino of Van Nuys, CA, Gabriel Smith of Apache Junction, AZ, Samuel Harcrow of Tuscaloosa, AL, Elijah Harcrow of Tuscaloosa, AL, Nicholas Harcrow of Tuscaloosa, AL, Scarlet Davis of Tuscaloosa, AL, and Francisco Avelino of Van Nuys, CA.
Mr. Smith was born August 27, 1947 in Pickens County, AL. He retired in 1993 from the United States Navy after 23 years of service. He was loved dearly by his family and friends. An avid Bama and Dodger fan, he was thrilled to see his beloved Dodgers win the 2020 World Series.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Dwight Herring, 9769 Hwy 159, Gordo, AL 35466.
