Obituary

TUSCALOOSA – Dr. Joseph Summers Davis, Sr., age 97, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., died June 24, 2016, at his residence. Services will be 10 a.m. Monday, June 27, 2016, at Gordo First United Methodist Church with Rev. Ron McKay officiating. Burial will follow in Gordo City Cemetery with Skelton Funeral Home of Reform directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Floyd Davis; parents; sister, Annette Davis Dean (Walter); and brothers, Dr. L. C. "Jack" Davis, Jr., John Mack "Tony" Davis and Dr. Dudley Leonard Davis.
Survivors include his daughter, Diane Davis Fleming and husband, Joe, of Huntsville, Ala.; sons, Joseph "Jody' Summers Davis, Jr. of Tuscaloosa, Ala. and Wayne Floyd Davis and wife, Melanie, of Daphne, Ala.; sisters-in-law, Alice Stuart "Dee" Davis, Alta Davis and Josephine Camp Davis; grandchildren, Anna Fleming Flesch (Tracy) of Huntsville, Ala., Samuel Summers Fleming (Leslie) of Huntsville, Ala., John Owen Davis (Kandis) of Daphne, Ala. and Andrew Floyd Davis (Kelsey) of Daphne, Ala.; great- grandchildren, Sydney Summers Flesch, Katie Ann Flesch, Merril Elizabeth Fleming, Anna Langlee Wallace and Kamdyn Melanie Davis; and other extended family members.
Dr. Joseph Summers Davis, Sr. was born April 12, 1919 in Gordo, Alabama to the late Dr. Lewis Clifton Davis, Sr. and Annie Lou Shepherd Davis. Dr. Davis was a graduate of Gordo High School and continued his education at Birmingham Southern College where he received his undergraduate degree. He then attended Medical School at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. The fifth generation physician practiced medicine in Tuscaloosa from 1947 until his retirement in 1999.
Dr. Davis also served in the medical corps in the United States Navy. He served aboard the USS Lake Champlain in the Mediterranean Sea. He was Chief of the Medical Staff at Druid City Hospital from 1961­-1962, a co-founder of West Alabama General, now Northport Medical Center and was also a charter member of Indian Hills Country Club.
Pallbearers will be F.B. "Buzz" Marks, Walter Wood Dean, Jr., Donald Clifton Davis, L.C. Davis III "Clif" Davis III, Tracy Donald Flesch, Samuel Summers Fleming, John Owen Davis and Andrew Floyd Davis.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to The Hiram Glass Davis Scholarship in c/o Birmingham Southern College, 900 Arkadelphia Rd., Birmingham, AL 35254. -
