Obituary

John Marshall Burkhalter, age 79, of Gordo, went to be with his Lord on August 19, 2015. Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, August 23, 2015, at Shiloh Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Hershel Owen, Rev. Roger Lucas and Rev. Danny Turman officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Skelton Funeral Home of Reform directing. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to service at the church.He was preceded in death by his son, John T. "Timmy" Burkhalter; his parents; brother, Bruce Burkhalter; and sister Marjorie Rowe.Survivors include his wife, Marion Pate Burkhalter; nephew, Dewayne Burkhalter; and niece Karen Rowe.Mr. Burkhalter was born January 26, 1936 in Gordo, Ala. to the late James Floyd Burkhalter and Jeanette Walters Burkhalter. He was a long standing member of Shiloh Free Will Baptist church and a proud member of the armed forces, a veteran of the U.S. Army. John was a retired employee of Barnett's Transportation and a lifelong resident of Pickens County. He loved the sport of hunting, and was an avid domino and rook player and loved to shoot the moon. He was a good and loving husband and father and is sorely missed. Pallbearers will be Ray Dyer, Skip Sutton, Dudley Burkhalter, Josh Kernop, Gene Crowe and Jeff Parker.Honorary pallbearers are Johnna Walker, Karen Rowe, John Fair, Linda Kilgore, Virginia Dunaway, Elizabeth Taylor, Roger and Deborah Wheat, Blake Bedsole, Mel Sutton, Wilford Burkhalter, Jimmy Earl Crimm, members of Shiloh Free Will Baptist Church and seniors of Gordo Activity Center.In lieu of flowers, memorials to Shiloh Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery fund, 139 Blue Ridge Road, Gordo, Ala., 35466.
