John William Hammond, age 87, of Palmetto, AL passed away July 9, 2022 at his residence. Funeral services will be 11:00 am Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at Skelton Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Mike Hall officiating. Burial will follow in Unity Grove Methodist Church Cemetery with Skelton Funeral Home of Reform directing. Visitation will be 30 minutes prior and immediately following the service at the funeral home.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Lois Brown Hammond; his parents, Joe William Hammond and Mary Louvenia Moore Hammond; sisters, Cora Bailey, Sarah Brownlee, Lillian Hollinger, Jane Price, Joan Wilson and Pearl Hall; brother, Evan Hammond and grandson, Matthew Hunter Callahan.
Survivors include his daughters, Lisa Hammond Callahan (Bobby) of Sweetwater, AL and Mary Kate Hammond of Palmetto, AL; son, Joseph S. Hammond (Cami) of West Blocton, AL; brother, James Roland Hammond (Kay) of Fayette, AL; three grandchildren, Catherine Hammond, Andrew Hammond both of West Blocton, AL and Ashley Brooke Matchett (Austin) of Robertsdale, AL; his grand-cats, Anabell Lee and Edgar Allan and more loved nieces, nephews and cousins than space to list them.
John was born in Palmetto, Alabama, moved to Tuscaloosa and lived in Cottondale for 33 years then moved back to Palmetto where he lived until his passing. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in the Military Police from 1958-1960 and the Army reserves from 1960-1962. John married the love of his life December 22, 1961 and they were three weeks shy of 51 years together when Lois passed away.
John was a member of Unity Grove Methodist Church and worked at the VA Hospital as a CNA, retiring after 30 years of service. During this time he also worked as a carpenter, painter, woodworker and flower delivery driver. John loved gardening, cars, animals, the simple things in life, his wife and kids and grandkids and country music.
Honorary Pallbearers are members of Unity Grove Methodist Church.
