FAIRHOPE | John Lammers passed away on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 in Fairhope, Alabama. A native of Alabama, he was born in Sumter County and recently moved to Fairhope after living in Carrollton for the past 35 years. As his last act of service to others, John donated his body to science at the University of South Alabama.He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Geraldine Johnson Lammers; his three children, Dr. Eugene Lammers (Cecilia) of Fairhope, Mrs. Glenda Lammers Lee (Glenn) of Carrollton, and Mr. Paul Lammers (Susan) of The Woodland, Texas. He is also survived by his sister, Mrs. Fannie Mae Green of Selma, Alabama and his sister-in-law, Carol Lammers of Purvis, Miss. He is survived by his six grandchildren, David Lammers (Erin), Mary Lammers, Emily Shraga (Geoff), John Lammers (Katie), Kim Lammers, and Katherine Lammers. He is survived by his three great-grandchildren, Naomi Lammers, Eliza Lammers, and Sawyer Lammers. Additionally, he is survived by many cousins, nieces, and nephews including his double first cousin and great friend Dr. Joseph Lammers.John joined the United States Air Force as a young man and remained in the Air Force until his retirement in 1979 after 28 years of service. He served in the Korean War early in his Air Force career He received numerous commendations and citations including the Air Force Commendation Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, the Air Force Good Conduct Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation.John was an active member of the Carrollton Lions Club where he served several years as Treasurer and as President. He was awarded the first annual John W. Owings Memorial Award. He also was a key part of the annual soup cooking fund raisers the group held. He served two terms on the Carrollton City Council from 1980 to 1988. In 1996 he ran for Mayor, winning that election and three more to serve as the Mayor of Carrollton for sixteen years. Additionally, he served on the Pickens County Hospital Foundation Board, the West Alabama Regional Commission including one year as the Chairman, served as the President of the West Alabama Mayors Association, the Pickens County Natural Gas Board, and served a number of years as an active member of the Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department. He was a Certified Municipal Official, a member of the Executive Committee of The Alabama League of Municipalities, and a member of the Alabama Association of Regional Councils. He was also a certified EMT.John was an active member of the Carrollton United Methodist Church where he served in many roles including Superintendent of Sunday School, Administrative Board, Usher, Trustee, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and was always excited to drive the bus for church trips. Additionally, he enjoyed ringing the church bell every Sunday. He was a long time delegate to the North Alabama Annual Conference.John served in various roles in the Boy Scouts of America for over 50 years. Most notability he served as the Scoutmaster of Troop 18 in Carrollton for over 35 years. During his tenure as a Scoutmaster or Assistant Scoutmaster in multiple troops he helped over 60 boys earn the rank of Eagle Scout. He served as an Assistant Scoutmaster for both National Scout Jamboree and World Scout Jamboree troops. He was a frequent visitor to the National Scout Jamboree with Troop 18, was a visitor at the World Scout Jamboree that celebrated the 100 year anniversary of the founding of Scouting. He took groups of scouts to Philmont Scout Ranch seven times. He attended the Philmont Training Center several times. He attended advanced leader training and earned his Wood Badge at Camp Horne in Cottonwood, Alabama. He received the District Award of Merit, the Silver Beaver, and the God and Service Awards. Additionally, he was a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow.There will be a memorial service held on Sunday, March 2, 2014 at the Carrollton United Methodist Church at 3 p.m. with Rev.
