Obituary

Lucile Marine Johnston, age 94, of Aliceville passed away on July 28, 2024. The daughter of Clyde Wesley Marine and Maude Hendrix Marine, she was born on January 10, 1930, in Panola, Alabama.  She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brothers Clyde, Charlie and Jack Marine. She is survived by her daughter Johnye Burns (Dennis), son Mark Johnston (Connie), daughter Frances McMillan (Frank), grandchildren Matthew Burns (Carla), Joanna Averette, (Ricky), Hannah Skelton, Samuel Johnston, Benjamin Johnston, and great grandchildren, Nathan Burns, Andrew Burns (Madison), Charlee Averette, Lawson Averette, Cameron Averette, Grayson Skelton and Cooper Skelton, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Lucile graduated from Aliceville High School and studied home economics at Livingston University, serving both schools as a cheerleader.   She was a member of the New Era Arts Club and the Aliceville Garden Club.  She loved to cook, often three meals a day, and loved serving her family.  She enjoyed sewing, making everything from clothes to curtains.  Among her projects were needlepoint, upholstery, refinishing furniture, and carpentry.  She had a goldfish pond in the backyard with plants that would only bloom at night.  Eventually bullfrogs moved in and she was delighted.  She had a soft spot in her heart for animals of all kinds and every stray, domestic or not, found a kind word and a bite to eat at her door.

She loved the scent of rain, the sound of mourning doves in late afternoon, nighttime thunder and lightning in the distance.  She loved simple things and could find something lovely almost anywhere.  She was an avid reader and loved studying history.  Over the years she enjoyed traveling to Europe and the Caribbean.

She was generous and kind, and always interested in the lives of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Lucile's life will be held at Skelton Funeral Home's Dogwood Chapel in Aliceville on August 2 at 10:00 a.m.  Pallbearers will be Samuel Johnston, Benjamin Johnston, Nathan Burns, Andrew Burns, Lawson Averette and Cameron Averette,

Special thanks to the staff of the Aliceville Manor Nursing Home and the staff of Hospice of West Alabama.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cemetery Fund of the Panola United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 101, Panola, Alabama, 35477.
