DANCY – On March 10, 2018, Peggy King passed away peacefully at home in Dancy, Alabama, surrounded by her family. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church Aliceville at 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 14, 2018, followed by visitation in the Church Fellowship Hall, Rev. Dr. Tom Kay and Rev. Jason Housewright officiating. It will be preceded by a private family graveside service with Skelton Funeral Home of Reform directing.
Peggy was born on June 1, 1926, in Mutoto, Belgian Congo, where her parents served as missionaries. She attended Queens College in Charlotte, North Carolina, and graduated with a nursing degree from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia.
She was preceded in death by her husband of forty-nine years, William D "Sunny" King; her parents, Rev. Earl Spottswood King and wife, Margaret Orcelia Bissett King; her brother, Rev. Earl Spottswood King, Jr and wife, Virginia King; and her brother-in-law, Bill Dyer.
Survivors include her sister, Ginny Ann King Dyer, Atlanta, Georgia; her children: William "Bill" (Jennie) King; Allyson (Neal) Cagle; Howard King; David (Gina) King; and Nancy (Tracy) Ferren; her grandchildren: Sam Scott (Crystal); Maggie King; Cecilianne (Tee) Neely; Chris (Taylor) Cagle; Carsten Cagle; Anna Cagle; Matthew (Harley) King; Diane (Toby) Mills; Ben Ferren; Will Jones; Sam Ferren and Sunny Ferren; her great-grandchildren: Kingston, Holland and Loxley Scott; Sebelle Cagle; and Lyla and Nora Mills; her very special friend, Annie T. Goodwin and numerous nieces and nephews.
Peggy spent over fifty years in the nursing profession. She and Sunny moved back home to Dancy, Alabama, in 1952, where she first worked at South Pickens County Hospital as an RN and the only surgical nurse. Later she was Director of Nurses at both the North Pickens County and South Pickens County Hospitals. In 1975, she became clinical director of West Alabama Emergency Medical Services. There she established the clinical program for emergency medical services in this area, training emergency response personnel on Basic Life Support as well as medical interns, doctors, and nurses on Advanced Life Support.
Peggy will always be remembered for her servant heart. She dedicated her entire life to serving her community, her profession, and most importantly, her family. For sixty-six years, Peggy has been a member of First Presbyterian Church Aliceville serving as church treasurer, Sunday school teacher, pianist, president of the Women of the Church, and a tireless worker for many church projects and functions. She was a true Southern lady and left a huge legacy in West Alabama.
