Obituary

Martha Archer Horton, (January 25, 1941-April 6, 2024)
A caring and compassionate wife, mother, and grandmother, Martha A. Horton, 83, passed peacefully at home on April 6, 2024, from Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
Martha was welcomed to the world in Shelbyville, TN in 1941 by her parents Cordell and Sue Archer and sister, Susan. Martha would say that her childhood was quiet and uneventful, but those around her would provide ample proof for her flair for mischief and independence (or some might say stubbornness.)  After graduating from Shelbyville Central High School, Martha travelled to Atlanta, Georgia to attend Emory University. There she earned a degree in History with her Teaching Certification, while spending her summers in Maine as a camp counselor.
Martha met her husband, Joe, after college at her first job as a teacher for the Rockdale County School System in Conyers, Ga. There they were both history teachers and became fast friends, marrying two years later in the summer of 1965. Martha was devoted to Joe and their two children, always supporting their many school and sporting activities. During this time, she also honed her cooking skills and is known for her chicken spaghetti, pound cake, and Parker House rolls. If you had the chance to experience these culinary gifts, you know you were blessed.
Martha also will be known for her never-ending volunteer work, both at church and in the community. Martha served as a longtime Sunday School Teacher at Conyers Presbyterian Church and as an active member of her church Circle. Once moving to Aliceville, Alabama for retirement, she became even busier. You could find her frequently at the Aliceville Museum and then supporting the Tuscaloosa Habitat for Humanity and Tuscaloosa Community Soup Bowl. Martha's energy will be missed by all.

Martha was predeceased by her husband, Joe Cunningham Horton, parents, Cordell East Archer and Sue Baker Archer, sister-in-law, Jeanette D. Horton, and niece, M. Virginia Horton Szabo-Durham (Ginger).  She is survived by her son, Joseph C. Horton (Bucky) and his wife, Kara, and daughter, Elizabeth H. Rosemeyer (Lib) and her husband Matt; her five grandchildren, Jackson C. Horton, William A. Horton, Charles J. Rosemeyer (Charlie Joe), Adam M. Rosemeyer, and Cambria M. Rosemeyer. She is also survived by her sister, Susan A. Haynes and her husband, Joseph B. Haynes (Barney) and brothers-in-law, William A. Horton (Bill) and his wife, Jackie, and Charles R. Horton (Charlie) and his wife, Marguerite (Rita), as well as many nephews and nieces and grand-nephews and grand-nieces.
