Obituary

ALICEVILLE - Mary Kaye Strickland Reed, age 70, of Aliceville, Ala., passed away December 16, 2017 at Grandview Medical Center. Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 20, 2017, at Aliceville First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Jason Housewright and Rev. Dr. Thomas G. Kay, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Franconia-Oak Grove Cemetery with Skelton Funeral Home of Reform directing. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, December 19, 2017, at Dogwood Chapel at 200 5th St. N.E., Aliceville, AL 35442.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Lydia Patricia Strickland; and stepmother, Mary Lillian Strickland.
Survivors include her husband, Charles E. "Butch" Reed, Sr. of Aliceville, Ala.; son, Charles E. "Chuck" Reed, Jr. and wife, Natalie, of Covington, Ga.; grandsons, Charles E. "Trey" Reed, Hudson Owens Reed and Seth Ochs, all of Covington, Ga.; brother, William H. "Bill" Strickland, Jr. (Barbara) of Alabaster, Ala.; step-sister, Linda Sparkman (Kirk) of Cypress, Texas; aunts, Nell Holliman of Aliceville, Ala., Annie Lois Campbell (Sonny) of Gordo, Ala. and Betty Strickland of Deltona, Fla.; uncle, Cecil Strickland (Helen) of Northport, Ala.; and numerous special nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mary Kaye Strickland Reed was born July 18, 1947 in Aliceville, Alabama to the late William H. Strickland and Mary Lois Eatman Strickland. She was a graduate of the University of West Alabama. She taught high school in Georgia and Alabama. Upon moving back to Aliceville and changing careers, she was employed with the Pickens County Department of Human Resources for 34 years, having worked 18 years in protective services and foster care and 16 years as food stamp supervisor until retiring in 2007.
Kaye was a member of the Aliceville First Presbyterian Church, member of the Phi Mu Sorority, Gideon's Auxiliary, Order of the Eastern Star and member/officer of several professional organizations.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Eatman, David Gentry, Charles Davis, Jay Steen, Don Hickman, Hugh Summerville, Brad Seymer and Lynn Walker.
Honorary pallbearers are Ruling Elders and Deacons of Aliceville First Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, Virginia 22312 or to one's favorite charity.
