He graduated from Palmetto High School where he played baseball, basketball and was quarterback for the Palmetto Tigers football team. He accepted the call to the ministry at the age of 19 and led many people to Christ in his 45 years of preaching, pastoring churches in Pickens, Fayette, Lamar and Tuscaloosa counties. Southern gospel music was his passion, being the bass singer for the "Woolbright Quartet" for over 20 years. When Mayo wasn't singing or preaching, he would be cheering on his favorite football team, the Alabama Crimson Tide; he was truly one of their biggest fans.
