Obituary

REFORM - Nena Parker Walker, age 82, went to be with the Lord on October 8, 2o17. She was born on October 31, 1934 in Buffalo, N.Y. A memorial service will be 3 p.m., Friday October 13, 2017 at Skelton Funeral Home Reform, Alabama with Rev. Ron Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Mineral Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, McShan, Ala. with Skelton Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be immediately following the service at the funeral home.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Elijah and Caroline Parker; brothers, Guice Parker and Wayne Parker; sisters, Louise Parker Brown and Kathryn Parker Campbell.
She is survived by her children, Jefferson Walker, Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Jennifer Manning (Leon) of McShan, Ala.; sister Charlotte Fritchie, St. Petersburg, Fla.; grandchildren, Alex, Nathan and Rachel Walker and Trey, Maria and Luke Manning; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Walker was a retired elementary school teacher from Good Hope Elementary where she taught for 25 years. She was honored with numerous teaching awards, among which was Cullman County Teacher of the Year.
Mrs. Walker was known for her strength as a writing teacher and her advocacy for literacy. She was a lifetime member of Alpha Delta Kappa Internal Honorary Organization for Women Educators, a member of First Baptist Church of Tuscaloosa and the Willing Workers Sunday School Class.
Mrs. Walker was a graduate of Emma Samson High School, Gadsden, Alabama and graduated with highest honors from both St. Bernard College and University of Alabama Birmingham with B.S., M.A. and A.A. degrees in Elementary Education.
Nena was a wonderful mother to her two children and loving Grandie Nena to her six grandchildren.
After retirement she moved to Tuscaloosa where she spent countless hours reading books, playing games and gently guiding each grandchild toward a thirst for knowledge.
The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to the staff at Hunter Creek Nursing Home and the staff of Hospice of West Alabama.
