Obituary

Newell Harper Moss, age 76, of Gordo, AL passed away April 19, 2023 at UAB Hospital Palliative Care in Birmingham, AL.  Funeral services will be 11:00 am Saturday, April 22, 2023 at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church with Rev. Glenn Kennedy and Rev. Jordan Lollar officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Skelton Funeral Home of Reform directing.  Visitation will follow the service at the church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Brantley Moss and Wendell Moss and sister, Jamelle Moss Sutton.
Survivors include is wife of 36 years, Melba Moss; daughter, Wendy Wilson; brothers, John Moss (Sherry), James Moss (Jewell) and Malcolm Moss (Wanda); brothers-in-law, Jerry Sutton, William Stephens (Cindy), Randy Sneed and Rodney Sanders (Tina); sisters-in-law, Annie Sue Moss, Mary Loyce Sutton, Dot Driver and Betty Sue Maughn; two grandchildren, Clay Vaught and Kayle Vaught and two great-grandchildren, Kiyan McDonald and Karrington Vaught.
Newell  was born January 4, 1947 in Gordo, Alabama to the late William Harold Moss and Vista Ligon Moss and was a  lifelong resident of Pickens County.   He was saved at an early age and was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.  Newell graduated from Gordo High School in 1965 and attended Livingston University on a baseball/football scholarship. He graduated from The University of South Alabama Banking School of the South in 1984 and retired after 43 years in the banking industry, beginning in 1973 at Bank of Gordo and retiring from FNB of Central Alabama in 2016.
He was inducted into the Gordo High School Sports Hall of Fame and in 2008 into the  West Alabama Softball Hall of Fame.   Newell spent 33 years as a volunteer Gordo Varsity Baseball Coach, investing in the lives of hundreds of young men.  He was a member and past President of the Gordo Rotary Club and Knolls Country Club.  He was named "Gordo Citizen of the Year" by the Gordo Area Chamber of Commerce in 2012.
Newell was a devoted family man.  He loved his family well and leaves a legacy of gentle kindness and love.  He served his community all his years and was a great supporter of his wife's passion for Operation Christmas Child.
Pallbearers will be Clay Vaught, Mason McCafferty, Garth Moss, Rafe Moss, Wayne Moss, Harold Moss, Daryl Moss, Barry Moss, Scott Sutton, Brannon Moss and Tammy Moss Lollar.
Honorary Pallbearers are past and present Gordo Baseball players, coaches and staff, former bank co-workers, GHS Class of 1965, best friends, Mike and Marilyn Driver and too many other good friends to mention by name.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to Mt. Pleasant Cemetery Fund or Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church for Operation Christmas Child,  P.O. Box 301, Gordo, AL 35466 or Gordo Rotary Club Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 12, Gordo, AL 35466.
