Obituary

KNOXVILLE, TENN. | Opal Bridges, age 79, of Knoxville, Tenn., formerly of Gordo, Ala., died May 24, 2014, at home surrounded by her loving family. A private graveside service will be held Tuesday, May 27, 2014, at 2 p.m. for family and close friends of Opal at the Gordo City Cemetery with Skelton Funeral Home of Reform directing.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Hugh and Mary Bridges; and her brother-in-law, Frank Speckhart.
Survivors include her sister, Lynda Speckhart of Knoxville, Tenn.; nephew, Bradley Speckhart of Knoxville, Tenn.; nieces, Stephanie Speckhart and husband, Sevan Takvoryan, of Knoxville, Tenn., and Dr. Ashley Speckhart and husband, Dr. Mike Binette, of Portland, Maine; special cousin, Ramona Wilson of Gordo, Ala.; and uncle, Dr. John Hicks and wife, Marilyn, of Miami, Fla.
Opal graduated from the University of Alabama and taught high school in Walker County before moving to New York City and Connecticut where she enjoyed a long career in merchandising. In 1982, Opal returned to Gordo and operated her beloved antique shop, Valley Ranch Studio along with her long-time friend, Barbara Pennington. She truly enjoyed her customers and friends who stopped by for visits. She will be remembered for her graciousness and warm hospitality. Opal inherited her love of animals from her dad and her giving nature from her mother. She provided care for her mother in her later years.
