Osweld Eugene Akin, age 88, of Mobile died May 18, 2015 surrounded by his wife and three daughters at Providence Hospital in Mobile.Services will be 12 noon Thursday, May 21, 2015 at Skelton Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Thomas Shepherd officiating. Burial will follow in Holly Springs Cemetery in Gordo, Ala with Skelton Funeral Home of Reform directing.He was preceded in death by his daughter, Priscilla Darlene Akin; his parents; brothers, Murray O'Neal Akins and Leo Donald Akin; sisters, Maxine Akin Locke and Geraldine Akin Clark; and son-in-law, George Semmie Free.Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Frances Butters Akin of Mobile, Ala.; daughters, Dierdre Akin Free of Gordo, Paulette Akin of Mobile and Janette Akin Koch (Joseph) of St. Louis, Mo.; sister-in-law, Elaine Akin; brother-in-law, Earl Clark; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.Mr. Akin was born June 13, 1926 in Moorhead, Mississippi to the late Samuel Horace Akin and Gertie Reynolds Akin. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and worked at Brookley Air Force Base in Mobile until November 1966. He transferred to St. Louis, Mo. where he worked at Essex Cryogenics until he retired in 1982 and returned to Mobile. Osweld was a member of the Masonic Lodge #40 in Mobile and an ordained deacon and a member of Moffett Road Baptist Church in Mobile. While in St. Louis, he served as choir director at Mattise Baptist Church. He loved gospel music and had a quartet in the 1960's. He liked to attend the National Quartet Convention and enjoyed meeting Pop Lester and his family in 1968 as well as traveling to singings on the Lester's bus. His last visit with Brian and Jonathan Lester was March 13, 2015 in Gautier (pronounced Go-Shay), Miss.
