Obituary

PLEASANT RIDGE| Richard Edward Owens Sr., age 92, of Pleasant Ridge, Ala., passed away on March 7, 2014 at Hospice of West Alabama. Services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday March, 11, 2014 at Pleasant Ridge Presbyterian Church with Dr. Tom Kay, Jr. and Rev. Richard Owens III officiating and Skelton Funeral Home of Reform directing. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 10, 2014 at Dogwood Chapel, 200 5th Street NE in Aliceville. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to service at the church.He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Mamie Watt Owens and his parents.He is survived by his daughter, Janet Owens Selig of Biloxi, Miss.; son, Richard Edward Owens Jr. (Debbie) of Pleasant Ridge, Ala.; his sister, Marcia Owens Hamilton (Ralph) of Atlanta, Ga.; and his 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Mr. Owens was born March 21, 1921 in Pleasant Ridge, Alabama to the late James Wilton Owens and Velma Mae Freeman Owens. Richard was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II. He was ruling elder in the Pleasant Ridge Presbyterian Church over 60 years. From 1964 to 1970, he served on the Greene County Board of Education. He was president of the Greene County Farmers Federation over 30 years and for most of his career he was a dairy farmer. He loved sports and bird hunting, especially turkey hunting in his later years, but most of all he loved his family and many friends. He inspired them with his courage, patient strength and gentle humility. His eyes always sparkled with humor, love of life, grace, and he endured his final days without complaint. His love of God, family, church, friends, and country give witness to a life lived to the fullest. Many loved him and will miss him, but all rejoice that he is home.Pallbearers will be James C. Owens, James L. Craft, Daniel O. Selig, James R. Selig, J. Bradley Owens, and John Morgan Owens. Honorary Pallbearers will be Charles W. Owens, Wayne Owens, Hugh Owens, Kenneth Owens, and Everett Owens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Pleasant Ridge Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund, 21730 Hwy 14, Eutaw, AL. 35462 or Hospice of West Alabama, 3851 Loop Road Tuscaloosa, AL 35404.
