Obituary

KENNEDY | Virgil Junior Wheat, age 85, of Kennedy, died July 4, 2014, at Sansing Country Home. Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at Skelton Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ralph Smith and Rev. Dewayne Pounds officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Ashcraft Corner Baptist Church Cemetery with Skelton Funeral Home of Reform directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to service and following the service his family and friends will have a fellowship celebrating Virgil's life at the Palmetto Community Center.He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Udell, Leodus, Melvin, J. C., and Adolph Wheat; and sister, Jewel Dollinger.Survivors include his wife, Ellen Williams Wheat of Ensley, Ala.; daughter, Carol Ann Gartman and husband, Rodney of Kennedy, Ala.; son, Andrew Giles Wheat of Birmingham, Ala.; sisters, Dorothy Whitlock and Vernell Betz, both of Birmingham, Ala.; grandchildren, Nicholas Fisher (Holly) of Kennedy, Ala. and U.S. Army Private Jessica Wheat of Kennedy, Ala.; and great-granddaughter, Zoey Amber Fisher.Mr. Wheat was born September 17, 1929 in Palmetto, Alabama the seventh of nine children born to Giles Otho Wheat and Rosie Williams Wheat. He served as Treasurer and was an elder and faithful member of Rocky Ridge Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Rocky Ridge, Ala. Upon moving back to Pickens County, he attended and joined the Chapel Hill Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. Junior was a retired accountant and purchasing manager for Specification Rubber Products and a veteran of the U. S. Air Force. He was one of the founding members of the Westover Water Works in Westover, Ala. He loved his family and was a devoted son, sibling, husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed playing and watching golf. He loved football, especially watching his son and grandson play and loved watching his granddaughter play softball. Junior was a lifetime Alabama Crimson Tide and country music fan. He liked traveling and trips in the motor home which included Alabama games, regular family vacations to Opryland, the beach, confederate air shows and high school and Air Force reunions.Pallbearers will be Logan McCool, John Payne. John Goodwin, Aaron Conley, Matt Cummings, Tony Gartman and Nick Fisher.Honorary Pallbearers are Ely Williams and Rodney Gartman.
