Wanda’s life was one marked by education and lifelong learning. She obtained a BA from Livingston University (West Alabama University) in 1968 and began her teaching career in Reform, Al in the last year of segregation at what was then, Hopewell High School. The following years she taught in integrated high schools in Pickens County until moving to the Community College level in the mid-70s. Wanda believed strongly that every child should receive an equal opportunity to learn and achieve their full potential.
Wanda retired from Bevill State Community College in 2000 as Dean of the Fayette Campus. And became Department Chair of Developmental Studies At Pensacola Junior College. She loved living in Gulf Breeze, FL where she would frequent the beach and spend lots of time with grandkids at her favorite “Little Beach”. After retirement from PJC, she moved to Foley, AL to a piece of land that would bring her peace and many memories for her children and grandchildren.
To say Wanda loved to read would be an understatement. She also loved to travel and spend time with family, especially her grandchildren who lovingly call her “Nana”. She also enjoyed all kinds of sports, but, in particular, any sport her grandchild was currently playing. She was known by everyone who knew her to be an avid and enthusiastic Alabama fan, especially football!
Pallbearers will be Jake Cook, Eric Schnittker, Brady Cook, Daniel Schnittker, Brent Langer, Will Cook, Aidan Schnittker and Lochlan Meekins.
In lieu of flowers you can make a donation in her memory to your local library or Arbor Springs Church for Samaritan’s Purse Shoeboxes.
